A baby with only male relatives.
Rufus Wainwright announced yesterday that he and his fiance, Jorn Weisbrodt, welcomed a baby girl via surrogate. The surrogate was Lorca Cohen, daughter of Leonard Cohen.
Lorca Cohen carried and gave birth to a child who is presumably her own genetic offspring. By the lights of the Montreal Gazette writer, this doesn’t make Lorca Cohen a mother, but it does make Lorca Cohen’s father a “granddad”.
Isn’t it amazing to live in a country where women’s contributions are so highly valued? Gosh, I feel lucky.
ETA: Rufus Wainwright himself refers to Lorca as a “parent” in his announcement of the birth. Double fail, Montreal Gazette.
